So many different scenarios ... homeless animals in need of life-saving emergency care; surgical intervention to treat an injury; medication to fight an infection ... only a very few examples of the many circumstances that underline the importance of the WDHS Emergency Animal Relief Fund (EARF). There was a time years ago when such scenarios would make us stop and ask, "Can we afford to help this animal?" However since the inception of EARF in 2007, that question can be answered with certainty, "Yes, we can!" Fundraising endeavors throughout the year raise monies for EARF so when the need arises, monies are available. Since 2007, almost 1,000 animals have been helped by EARF and these animals have been able to achieve their second chance at life and love. Without a doubt, we could not make this happen without ongoing and steadfast community support.

The Annual PAWSitive Action Walkathon is our most important fundraiser for EARF. Please consider participation - you don't need a dog to walk, everyone is welcome! For further information, please see the PAWSITIVE Action poster and the brochure/pledge sheet. The animals are counting on you and on their behalf, we thank you!

Sincere thanks go to our participating restaurants: Beamsville Fish and Chips (Beamsville and Welland), Blue Star (Welland), Café on Main (Fonthill), Country Store Kettle & Grill (Port Colborne), Harvey's (Welland) and Reeb House (Port Colborne). Their partnership with us in support of the walkathon is greatly appreciated. Thinking about dining out? Please consider visiting one of these establishments!!

Are Your Pennies Looking for a Good Home?

Heads or (wagging) tails ... either way your pennies will help the animals!!

The Canadian Government is phasing out the penny from Canada's coinage system and the transition date of February 4, 2013 has come and gone. Many businesses will no longer accept pennies - although your pennies may not be worth anything to you, they will be worth a lot to us! So please give us your two cents (or as many cents as you would like to give in pennies) and we will make sure your pennies will make a positive difference!

THE 4 R'S .... REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE = REVENUE FOR WDHS

Cleaning out your closets and getting rid of your electronic waste - good for you and good for us!

Through an agreement signed a few months ago with Green Tec, the WDHS offers a destination for your old or unwanted ELECTRONIC WASTE, eg. computers, printers, TV's, cell phones, etc. A Green Bin is located in the parking lot and a portion of resulting revenue will be directed by Green Tec to the Shelter. Please refer to the E-Waste Acceptable Electronics List.

In addition to electronic waste, we are now providing a drop-off location for your unwanted CLOTHING, SHOES AND LINENS. These items will be put to good use by a local charitable group and according to the volume collected, a donation will be made to the WDHS. Both bins are ready and waiting in our parking lot for your unwanted items - please keep this in mind as a way to be environmentally friendly and help the animals at the same time!

Cat Adoption Centre at Seaway Mall

We are looking for mature, reliable adults to volunteer weekdays/evenings/weekends at our Cat Adoption Centre. Duties include interacting with the public, promoting adoptions, cleaning and tending to our many cats and kittens. If you would like to make a positive difference in the lives of many cats and kittens and turn your spare time into many rewarding moments, the Welland & District Humane Society would love to hear from you. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the Cat Crew Volunteer Application and/or email nancythomas@cogeco.ca
